Email marketing in New York

I work with New York ecommerce brands from the UK, remotely and monthly, inside your own email platform. The overlap is better than people expect and the work is the same. Here is how the time difference, the calendar and the US rules actually play out.

Everything runs remotely, by email and the occasional video call. There is no New York office and I do not hold in-person meetings.

Working with a freelance email marketer across time zones

New York is five hours behind UK time, so my afternoon is your morning. In practice that means anything you send at the end of your day is answered before you start the next one, and there is a solid four-hour window every day for calls if you want them.

It also means sends get built and scheduled before your working day begins. Because I am one person rather than a team, there is no handover between shifts and no account manager relaying questions. The about page covers why the structure stays that simple.

Everything happens inside your platform, so you can see the work as it is built rather than waiting for a report about it.

What is different about a US ecommerce list

Send times and volume expectations

US subscribers are used to being emailed more often, and tolerate it better. Two to three campaigns a week is normal in a lot of categories where a UK list would prefer one.

Shipping and returns dominate objections

Domestic shipping speed, free shipping thresholds and free returns are the questions your flows have to answer. Put the threshold in the abandoned cart series and repeat it before the holidays.

Sales tax and pricing display

Tax added at checkout surprises nobody in the US but changes how you write about price. Say the number people will actually pay where you can.

Compliance is different

US sending is governed by CAN-SPAM rather than GDPR, which is looser on consent and strict on unsubscribes, physical address and honest subject lines. If you also sell to the UK or EU, run to the stricter standard and you are covered either way.

The American year has a different shape. Late January and February are quieter. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day are real sale moments rather than incidental bank holidays. Back to school runs through August. Then the fourth quarter dominates everything: Halloween, Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a five-day event, Green Monday, and shipping cutoffs into Christmas.

Thanksgiving week is the busiest inbox of the year, so the emails either need to be genuinely good or deliberately different. Plenty of independent brands do better sending an honest note about not discounting than joining the shouting.

The mechanics of each flow do not change with the calendar. The ecommerce guide sets out the build order I use regardless of market.

How the monthly work runs, and what it costs

Monthly, with one month’s notice either way, in your existing platform. Flows get built and improved, campaigns get written and sent, list hygiene gets checked, and you get a short written summary of what changed and what it earned. Pricing is published in pounds on the pricing page, which usually works out favourably against a New York agency retainer.

It starts with a free audit: send a store URL and I will go through the account by hand and write up what is losing money and what I would fix first. Five working days, no call required, yours to keep either way.

Not sure where your account is losing money? The free audit tells you in writing, in five working days.

What the first ninety days looks like

Month one: fix and build

Deliverability, domain authentication and list hygiene first, then abandoned cart and the welcome series. Nothing new gets sent into a broken account.

Month two: rhythm

A US sending cadence is usually two a week rather than one, so month two is about proving the list can take that without unsubscribes climbing.

Month three: segment and refine

Split by spend, recency and category, add the next flow if your plan covers it, and start improving individual emails on their own numbers. Then the fourth-quarter calendar gets agreed early, because November is not the month to plan November.

The services page covers what the monthly work includes once that is in place.

New York email marketing FAQs

Does working with someone in the UK cause delays?

Rarely. Requests sent at the end of your day are usually answered before your next one, and scheduled sends are built ahead.

Do you know US platforms?

Yes. Klaviyo, Shopify Email, Omnisend, Mailchimp and the rest are the same tools everywhere. See platforms.

Can you handle CAN-SPAM compliance?

Yes, and if you also sell into the UK or EU I will build to the stricter consent standard so one list serves both.

What currency do you invoice in?

Pounds sterling. Card and bank payment both work fine from a US account.

Do I need to book calls?

Only if you want them, and they are video calls rather than meetings. There is a four-hour overlap most days, and most clients prefer written updates.
